Instances of racial microaggressions are common in daily teacher-student interactions, especially when there is student-teacher race incongruence. In such an academic setting, racial microaggressions often are brief, though frequent, and involve verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities. Whether intentional or unintentional, these brief indignities communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial views to students of color.
Sadly, the effect of these microaggressions on students of color emotional and/or psychological experiences seriously undermine their academic engagement and achievement. Effective and committed educators have a responsibility to create academic environments that are free of racial microaggressions. However, for many, teaching in racially diverse classrooms often leaves those educators feeling uncertain on the appropriate way to interact with students of color.
Educators can create academic environments that are free of racial microaggressions. Through workshops, webinars and private phone consultations, Ms. Miller provides educators with expert insight into marginalized groups’ experiences with and responses to racial microaggressions in the classroom. Her goal is to help educators understand: 1) how unconscious biases play a major role in how we process our assumptions; and 2) how those assumptions affect how we interact with students of color and, ultimately, communicate racial microaggressions.
Gwendolyn Miller has worked with district leaders and school faculties dedicated to promoting positive inter-ethnic student-teacher relationships. She has addressed issues on diversity for over 30 years as a teacher, consultant, facilitator, researcher, writer, and speaker. In her professional career, Ms. Miller has worked with many private and public academic institutions, non-profit agencies, school districts promoting positive inter-ethnic student-teacher relationships.
